Something that has been on my mind recently is the question; does the media influence the way society views specific topics or occurrences. In other words, does the news, television shows and movies shapes societies opinion on a specific topic. Recently this question has become more and more prevalent with the amount of media coverage over school shootings.
Due to the excessive amount of news coverage over the horror of these shootings it has in effect caused a social uproar. Now everyone is  how the legality of the ownership of guns. This has been a big topic for a number of years and it is a very touchy issue for the people that have lost loved ones due to these heinous crimes. I'm not discussing the act of the person that performed these crimes or devaluing the lives of the victims, what I'm discussing is what these acts of violence have caused.
Mass media have flocked to report on these crimes in the last year. From  actors to politicians on twitter to friends and family on Facebook to news reporters and the President on NBC. They're all reporting on how we should all fight gun control and how every citizen needs to take direct action in legalizing the prohibition of gun control. This doesn't leave us a lot of breathing room for formulating a personal opinion on the matter.
Since when did owning a gun become a crime? The people that are now in jail or dead because of the crimes they committed with a gun would of found another way to harm people if they couldn't get their hands on a gun. Crimes are committed everyday. Who's to say that a weapon such as a gun would be the "gateway" weapon to mass murder. Guns aren't the problem here, it's the people that are controlling them.
That is what the media has failed to point out and discuss. The failure to point out this simple fact has created a bias to guns which will lead to a natural fear to anyone that owns one, whether for protection or recreational use, it will be feared.
So to the question that does media influences our opinions, it certainly does. Maybe too much in fact.

Introduction

Hey there,
My  name is Rachel Vickers. I'm a sophmore at Texas A&M. I'm majoring in communication and minoring in business.
Growing up I never had a clear stance on what I wanted to be when I grow up. It changed from soccer player to architect to anthropologist to business woman to my current aspiration which is that I use the education I receive here to work for a media company. This includes all types media from television, cinematic and theater productions. I'm leaving my options open so I will hopefully get at least one of those.
This blog will be used to divulge further into the world of media and how technology can be used to enhance a product.
